The thermistor decreases the current resistance as it gets hotter. The electronic control board sends a current to the thermistor and can tell whether a decrease or increase in heat is needed by the relative resistance in the thermistor. In instances where the temperature falls too low, the thermistor then tells the boiler to switch on. This is called in-built frost protection and this process ignites the boiler when the resistance reading drops below a certain point.
